Welcome to the 2nd JAINpedia newsletter. The Jainpedia project has been going from strength to strength and I am delighted to report that we had a successful and fun-filled Mahavir Jayanthi celebration at the British Library. You will see from the events list that we continue to develop exciting programs to drive awareness about Jainism and about our heritage to the general public.

Our website has reached an exciting milestone. Our development partners, Kings College London have provided us with access to a beta site and are looking forward to releasing this soon. Our aim was to make JAINpedia the most authoritative Jain resource from the net, and we think you will agree! There will be more news in the next newsletter. Please join us in this exciting journey ? there are contact details at the bottom!

The JAINpedia project aims to digitize over 6,000 images from Jain manuscripts increasing access to Jain heritage collections from major UK institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Library, the Wellcome Trust Library and the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Images will be translated and supporting articles from Jain scholars can be viewed alongside several other features. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and others such as the Oshwal Association UK, this herculean project is well supported.

The project is also supported by events and exhibitions at the holding institutions and other cultural and religious venues. This newsletter will provide you with news and upcoming events brought to you by the JAINpedia project and the Institute of Jainology.

Volunteers are an important part of the project and are assisting in all areas. Volunteers can choose to guide exhibition visitors, or work on general events and the travellign exhibition or contribute to the website, by scanning books for the e-library, or sourcing media for the articles. Fill in the Volunteer form on the JAINpedia blog and do your bit to bring an ancient faith into the new millenium!
