Bhagawan Mahavir Birth Anniversary Celebrated at the Jain Temple of Chicago

ParticipantsA grand celebration event was held at the Jain Society of Chicago's (JSMC) Bartlett, Illinois temple on a festive occasion of Bhagawan Mahavir's birth anniversary on Saturday, April 19, 2008. About 1,800 people attended this event.

Mahavir Jayanti is regarded as the one of the most important Jain festivals of the year. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagawan Mahavir who was born in 599 BC. Mahavir was the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. On the night of conception his mother Trishala had a dream depicting 14 different auspicious things. The Astrologers interpreted the auspicious dreams seen by mother Trishala, that the child would be either an emperor or a Tirthankar.

JSMC President Atul Shah said that the entire Jain community throughout the Chicago land area, Indiana, and Wisconsin celebrated Mahavir Jayanti here at the Bartlett Jain Temple. On this auspicious day, artists Atik Shah, Dakshay Shah & Hema Shah made a beautiful replica of Mount Meru with other artifacts, where Devendra Indra took Bhagawan Mahavir to perform his first abhishek- ceremonial bath. Artifacts were made to have continuous jal abhishek on the idol of Mahavir.

The entire temple facility was decorated with flags & lights. In the morning there was a Digambar Puja coordinated by Kiritbhai Shah. In a Prayer Hall Mahila Mandal performed a “Snatra Puja” – a birth celebration of Bhagawan Mahavir. About 500 Jains gathered during the morning events. Vilasbhai & Nutanben Jain and Bipinbhai Shah sponsored these events.

In afternoon the Jain educational center hosted its 10th annual declamation contest for various age groups on three different topics. About 50 students, the largest number in past 10 years, participated and gave their speeches. Group1, age 10-13 yrs, topic: My vision of a Jain family in modern times, winners are: 1)Anjali Doshi, 2) Shama Shah & 3) Anish Doshi. Group 2, age 14-18 yrs, topic: Contribution of Jainism to the world, winners are: 1) Kushal Shah, 2) Shikhar Shah & 3) Shreya Shah. Group 3, age 19 yrs and above, topic: Divine light of Mantra, winners are: 1) Sejal Jain, 2) Hema Pokharana & 3) Namita Chovadia. Shri Rameshbhai Shah, Uttam Jain & Saloni Shah served as Judges for this declamation contest. Shri Manubhai Doshi awarded all the winners.

Inaguration ceremonyIn the temple facility various booths were setup for Membership drive, Fund raising drive, Food drive, etc. In the evening a grand cultural program was attended by more than 1,500 people. Illinois State Representative Mr. Randy Ramey of District 55 lit the lamp and inaugurated the program. About 250 kids and youths participated in this cultural show and presented a variety of artistic dance, garaba, classical, bharat natyam, skit, etc. The State Representative Ramey also addressed the congregation and said that following Lord Mahavirs message of non-violence will change the current situation of the world. On behalf of the Jain Society, Chairman Dipak Doshi awarded an appreciation plaque to the State Representative Randy Ramey.

Bhagawan Mahavir was a great teacher, his philosophies and teachings taught mankind the true path of happiness. His teachings on non-violence and importance of austerity have shown us the path to achieve salvation and spirituality.
